What is anxiety coaching?

Anxiety coaching is a form of coaching that focuses specifically on helping those who need it to manage their anxiety.

Unlike therapy, which often involves exploring the root causes of anxiety and working through past traumas, anxiety coaching is typically more action-oriented, with a focus on developing practical skills and strategies to manage anxiety in the present moment.

Coaches may use a variety of techniques and approaches, such as mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, or exposure therapy, to help clients manage their anxiety and improve their overall quality of life.

We run meaning centred coaching for anxiety which draws on these influences and much more.

How can coaching help with anxiety?

Coaching can be a powerful tool for managing anxiety when the coach has a background in mental health and well-being.

Coaching helps individuals develop a greater sense of control over their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By working with a coach, individuals can learn specific techniques and strategies for managing their anxiety, such as deep breathing, cognitive restructuring, or exposure therapy.

Coaching can also provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment for people to explore their anxiety and develop coping skills that work best for them.

What are some effective anxiety coaching techniques?

There are many effective anxiety coaching techniques that coaches may use to help clients manage their anxiety.

To generalise, common techniques include mindfulness practices, such as meditation or breathing exercises, cognitive restructuring, which involves challenging negative or distorted thoughts, and exposure therapy, which involves gradually exposing clients to anxiety-provoking situations in a safe and controlled way.

Coaches may also use other techniques, such as relaxation training, behavioral activation, or goal-setting, to help clients manage their anxiety and achieve their goals.

What is the difference between coaching and counselling for anxiety?

While both coaching and counselling can be helpful for managing anxiety, they differ in their approach.

It's difficult to pin down because their are so many approaches to counselling not possible to explore fully in a short article.

Counselling typically focuses on exploring the underlying causes of anxiety and working through issues rooted in the past, while coaching is more focused on developing practical skills and strategies for managing anxiety in the present moment.

Although some counselling approaches are more focused on the here and now and more likely to introduce techniques to help clients suffering with anxiety.

Some styles of counselling may be more appropriate for individuals with severe or chronic anxiety, while coaching may be better suited for those who are looking to improve their overall quality of life and develop coping skills for managing everyday stressors, worries, and concerns which contribute to their anxiety.

Having said that, the lines that separate counselling and coaching are increasingly becoming blurred, and really depends on the approach to therapy (some could look more like coaching than others).

Most therapists and coaches who understand anxiety will likely use techniques informed by your own signs and symptoms of anxiety.

How can I find an anxiety coach?

There are several ways to find an anxiety coach, including online directories, professional organisations, or referrals from friends or family members.

It's important to look for a coach who is experienced in working with anxiety, and who has a coaching style that resonates with you.

You may also want to consider factors such as cost, availability, and location when selecting an anxiety coach.

What should I expect from an anxiety coaching session?

During an anxiety coaching session, individuals can expect to work with their coach to set specific goals related to managing their anxiety, and to develop practical strategies for achieving those goals.

Coaches may use a variety of techniques, such as mindfulness practices, cognitive restructuring, or exposure therapy, to help clients manage their anxiety and develop coping skills.

Sessions may also involve problem-solving, accountability, and ongoing support to help clients stay motivated and on track.

Ultimately, the goal of anxiety coaching is to help individuals develop greater control over their anxiety and improve their overall quality of life.
