Ego over easy.
Firstly, it's important to humanise the person you believe is narcissistic.
While it may be easy to feel hurt and frustrated by a narcissist's behaviour, it is important to remember that they too are human beings with their own struggles and vulnerabilities.
By humanising the narcissist, we can begin to understand the underlying reasons for their behaviour and offer empathy and support where possible.
Curious about how to navigate these complex dynamics? At Harley Street Counselling and Training, we offer expert guidance to help you understand and manage relationships with narcissistic personalities. It's important to maintain healthy boundaries and prioritise our own well-being, but by approaching the narcissist with a non-judgmental attitude and seeking to understand their perspective, we may be able to create a space for healing and growth.
Remember that humanising the narcissist does not excuse their behaviour, but rather allows us to see them as complex individuals with their own stories and struggles.
Why will a narcissistic personality type go through periods of ignoring you?
A narcissist may ignore you for a variety of reasons, as their behaviour is often driven by their need for admiration, control, and attention. Here are some possible reasons why a narcissist may ignore you:
- Lack of Narcissistic Supply: Narcissists thrive on attention, admiration, and praise. If they feel that they are not receiving enough of these things from you, they may choose to ignore you.
- Punishment: Narcissists often use silence as a form of punishment. If they feel that you have somehow offended or displeased them, they may ignore you as a way of asserting their power over you.
- Control: Narcissists often use silence and withdrawal as a way of controlling others. By ignoring you, they may be trying to assert their dominance and manipulate you into doing what they want.
- Lack of Empathy: Narcissists have a limited capacity for empathy and may struggle to understand or respond to the emotional needs of others. They may ignore you simply because they do not understand or consider your feelings.
- Gaslighting: Narcissists may also use silence as a way of gaslighting you. By ignoring you, they may be trying to make you doubt your own perceptions and feelings, making it easier for them to manipulate and control you.
It's important to note that every situation is unique, and the reasons why a narcissist may ignore you can vary depending on the individual and the circumstances.
However, in general, a narcissist may ignore you as a way of gaining power and control over you, or because they are not receiving the attention and admiration they desire. Remember it’s not your fault!
